365 I: January 1 - June 30, 2009
365 II: July 1 - December 31, 2009

I'm going to attempt Project 365: one photograph a day for one year.

My goal/challenge is to make it a truly good photograph each day. I'm sure I won't do it, but I'm going to try. Hopefully I will have a good photographic record of 2009 by the time I'm done. I recommend checking this gallery out as a slideshow or in journal view.

Brendan > [365.001] Cranes
Alameda, California - January 1, 2009

To celebrate the end of 2008 and beginning of 2009, we had a sushi-making party with some friends. I made some paper cranes to decorate (using origami paper from Japan!). I took a series of photographs to look at which aperture I wanted to use to get the depth of field right for the cranes in the background -- a fun experiment.

Brendan > [365.002] Ticket to Ride
Alameda, California - January 2, 2009

Tonight, we played some atypical board games with some friends that share our geeky pastimes. This is a photograph of a game of Ticket to Ride in progress. I like the colors and geometric shapes (triangles!).

Brendan > [365.003] Last Light
Mt Tamalpais, California - January 3, 2009

Today we took a day trip to Mt Tamalpais. I've been there a few times, but it's always great to see what the day brings. The sunsets here are always great, provided there are a few clouds in the sky. This is looking northwest towards Stinson Beach. I like the grasses in the foreground -- very characteristic of this part of Mt Tam.

Brendan > [365.004] Tea Leaves
Alameda, California - January 4, 2009

Loose leaf black+jasmine tea in a tea ball. Elizabeth bought me (or us, I suppose) this tea from a small shop in San Francisco. We drink a lot of tea to keep warm (and because we like it). Acquiring a sophisticated taste for tea is one of my life goals. Luckily, tea isn't too expensive (at least at my current level of sophistication).

Alameda, California - January 5, 2009

My love in typical fashion. ♥
The scarf is hand made and sold in a small shop specializing in fair trade products. The earrings aren't anything fancy, but I like that they don't distract from her true beauty. ♥
Sappy commentary of the day.

Brendan > [365.006] ♥
Alameda, California - January 6, 2009

This is a statue from Guam Elizabeth's parents bought us, casting a wonderful shadow by candlelight. Pushing the limits of high ISO performance.

Brendan > [365.007] Reunion
Alameda, California - January 7, 2009

We had some friends visit from out of town, so we all got together for dinner and a game of Power Grid. Dave wiped the floor with us, but it was good fun, and a great time to catch up. More high ISO -- can you tell I take all of my photographs at night? :\

Brendan > [365.008] Man on Park Street
Alameda, California - January 8, 2009

Elizabeth and I went out for a wonderful dinner date at Asena. We walked there and back and took our cameras to complete our projects. Walking back along park street, I saw this man sitting alone on a bench in an alley. Even after setting ISO 3200, I had to bring out a lot more light (around two stops), resulting in even more noise. I probably could have used 1/100 instead of 1/200, but this shutter speed was working ok earlier. Someday I will take photographs in a setting with more light for this project. Nevertheless, I like the atmosphere of this photograph despite its technical imperfections.

Brendan > [365.009] Bridge
Alameda, California - January 9, 2009

Elizabeth shuffling cards for our cheap date night -- cooking dinner together (tofu with mushrooms, bok choy, and kabocha) and getting beaten down at cribbage. Twice.

If you look carefully, it seems like she's making a ♥ at me. But it's probably just to ask me to love her even after she decimates me.
